Ages 5 to 12:  Fitness in the Early Years

Children this age need physical activity to build strength, coordination, confidence, and
to lay the groundwork for a healthy lifestyle and future. They're also gaining more control
over how active they are and they should have many opportunities to participate in a
variety of activities, sports, and games that fit for their personality, ability, age, and
interests. Brainstorm with your children on activities that feel right. Most kids will
welcome a daily dose of fitness as long as it's fun.

At Hi 5 Fitness, we focus on getting fit using the following in the 5 to 12 age
group:
  • Obstacle Courses that they create together as a group
  • HOP Balls with Handles
  • Parachute Exercises
  • Various Sports Balls such as Basketball and Soccer
  • Yoga Balls
  • Balance Disks
  • Wobble Boards
  • BOSU Balance Trainer
  • Stability Disks
  • Cones
  • Dances
  • Hula Hoops
  • Hyperdash
  • Aerobic activities such as tag, jumping jacks, jump ropes, sack races, toe
    touches, etc.
  • Step Boards
  • Stretch Bands and Yoga Mats
  • Wii Fit (on occassion, but we all participate together!)
  • Visits to the grocery store to learn how to make healthy and smart food choices.

Every child develops a "Plan for the Week" of a new food and activities that they
will try each week at home and shares it with their parent at the end of class.  We
also do healthy cooking once per month where we'll sizzle up something healthy
and yummy in our test kitchen.  Last month, we made healthy whole wheat orange
juice pancakes and vegetable pizzas.  This month, we'll do taste testing with
foods to see what foods your child likes without actually seeing them first!  We
concentrate on the 'fun' part, and not on the 'exercise' part!  Your children will
leave asking when they can come back!

Teens:  Fitness in the Teen Years (We welcome children 12 and older to our teen
class.  Please ask if you think your child is under 12 and ready for this class)

It's recommended that teens get at least 1 hour of physical activity on most, preferably
all, days of the week. However, statistics show that physical activity tends to decline
during the teen years. Many teens drop out of organized sports and participation in
daily physical education classes is a thing of the past.  But given the opportunity, teens
can reap health benefits from almost any activity they enjoy.  Weight training and
exercise can improve strength and help prevent sports injuries.  Once they get started,
many teens enjoy the feeling of well-being, reduced stress, and increased strength and
energy they get from exercise.

At Hi 5 Fitness, we focus on getting fit using the following in the teen group:
  • BOSU Balance Trainer
  • Yoga Ball Exercises
  • Light Free Weights
  • Kickboxing
  • Wobble Boards to Develop Balance and Stability
  • Stability Disks to Develop Core Muscles and Good Posture
  • Obstacle courses that they create together as a group
  • Various Sports Balls such as Basketball and Soccer
  • Yoga Balls
  • Yoga and Pilates
  • Step Boards
  • Stretch Bands and Yoga Mats
  • Wii Fit (on occassion, but we all participate together!)
  • Visits to the grocery store to learn how to make healthy and smart food choices.

    .
... But kids are motivated by fun.  They'll do just about
anything if it is playful- including exercise and eat
healthy foods.  The Hi 5 Fitness program ultimately is
about maintaining life-long health through healthy
eating and staying physically active.
